語学留学はフィリピンがベストな国の理由を解説します。
When I studied at a language school called Encore Tagaytay in the Philippines, I tried to give an interview in English to Teacher Mon. “Why is the Philippines a good place to learn English?”
フィリピンのタガイタイにあるアンコールという語学学校で勉強した時に、先生のモンに英語でインタビューしてみました。「なんで語学留学はフィリピンがいいの？」。
I thought that I shouldn’t publish this interview because sometimes my English is wrong, but I decided to do it because he said he wants the public to hear his interview. I decided to think positively of my English interviews, and try and record the changes in my English.
自分の英語が適当すぎるので公開を止めようと思いましたが、モンにあのインタビューはどうなってるんだと言われて、仕方なく公開することにしました。定期的に英語インタビューをして、自分の英語の変化も記録してみようと前向きに考えることにしました。
I’m Mon. But most of my friends call me Teacher Mon.
モンだよ。ほとんどの友達はティチャーモンと呼ぶね。
Okay Teacher Mon. How many students have you ever taught?
今まで何人ぐらいの生徒を教えたの？
Including Koreans? Because I have been teaching for over 10 years. So roughly… 1000 almost. Koreans and Japanese combined. In 10 years of teaching.
僕はもう10年以上英語の先生をやってるから、韓国人を含めると、ざっと1000人ぐらいじゃないかな。
Now I’m very interested in studying English in the Philippines. But In Japan some people think that to study English in the Philippines is not so good. Because of their pronunciation. How do you think about it?
僕はフィリピン留学にすごい興味あるんだけど、日本の中では、フィリピン人の発音を懸念する人も多いんですよ。それはどう思う？
Studying English in the Philippines is not a new idea. Many students have been studying English in the Philippines for at least 15 years. For example, among Koreans studying English in the Philippines is very popular. And the Philippines is a popular destination to learn English. But I understand among the Japanese it’s a new idea or a new concept. About the pronunciation, it is not true.
フィリピン留学は新しいアイデアでも何でもないよ。少なくとも15年以上たくさんの人がフィリピンで勉強してるし、韓国ではすごい有名だからね。でも、日本では新しいアイデアっていうのは理解できるよ。ただ、発音について言うと、全然問題ないよ。
Because in fact the BBC, they published an article just last year. They said that the Philippines, as a place where you can find good teachers, is Okay because especially the pronunciation is like native speakers. The BBC said that, if you are looking for good pronunciation, the Filipino’s pronunciation is good, about English. Because, they said in the article, most of teachers is come from call center companies. They train the Filipino to speak like a real American or a real British person. Then after that maybe some of them work in the schools and they become teachers. That’s why the British writer in the BBC, he complimented especially the pronunciation of Filipinos.
ちょうど去年だけど、BBCにある記事があったんだ。そこで、フィリピン人の発音はネイティブみたいだから、フィリピンなら良い先生を探せるって書いてたんだよ。なぜなら、ほとんどの先生がコールセンターの出身だからね。コールセンターではアメリカ人やイギリス人が喋るように英語のトレーニングをされる。そして、コールセンターで働いた後に、英語の先生になるケースが多いんだ。

You think pronunciation is not a problem?
発音は問題ではないと。
Yes. Maybe there are other problems.
そうだね。たぶん他の問題があるんだよ。
What is other problem?
それって何？
For example, like the native idioms or expressions. Because, as you know, English language is constantly changing. Some old expressions die and some new expressions exsit. So the teacher’s job is to keep updated for example on the internet like that. You can see many new expressions. So if we wanna speak like real native speakers, we have to constantly learn.
例えば、イディオムとか表現。なぜなら、英語って変わり続けるでしょ。古い表現は使わなくなるし、新しい表現も生まれる。先生はアップデートし続けないとダメなんだ。もし、ネイティブのように英語を喋りたいなら、学び続けないといけない。
You also keep learning?
モンも学び続けてるの？
Yes. Of course. Magazines or movies, like that.
もちろん。雑誌や映画でね。
But sometimes I feel to keep the motivation is very difficult.
でも、モチベーションをキープするのって難しくない？
It depends on the person. But in my case I really like English. And I feel that among all the languages in the world English is the most effective for me. I like expressing myself in English. I always have motivation.
それは人によるよ。僕は英語が好きだからね。世界のいろんな言語の中で、英語は僕にとって効率的なんだよ。僕は英語で自分を表現するのが好きだから、いつでもモチベーションあるよ。
I feel so because If I have a question, you can answer everything. almost everything.
それは分かる。僕が英語に対する質問があったら、モンは何でも答えてくれるもんね。
Ah many of my x-students told me that I have a special talent in explaining the difficult parts of English. When I explain to them, it’s very clear and very simple. It’s easy to understand and easy to remember. That’s very important. Probably it’s right. Maybe it’s a skill or talent. but I can do that.
過去の生徒も同じようなことを言うよ。英語の難しいことを分かりやすく説明する能力が僕にはあるってね。僕が説明すると、明確でシンプル。そして、理解しやすくて、覚えやすい。それはすごい重要なこと。たぶん、そういうスキルが僕にはあるんだろうね。
I have a question. How do you think what kind of people match to the Philippines?
質問があるんだけど、フィリピンが合うタイプってあるの？
Right now most of the Japanese that I met are those who are… brave. Meaning they are willing to try new experiences like travel or meeting new people or studying different culture. These kinds of people, usually they are young. But I’ve met also older people. Most of these… backpackers sometimes and then also university students. They are not afraid to travel and experience different culture. So far they are very interested in learning English in the Philippines.
旅行とか、新しい人に会うとか、違う文化を学びたいとか、新しい体験を望んでいる人かな。そういう人は大抵若い。でも、年配の人にもたまに会うよ。バックパッカーでも、大学生でもね。彼らは違う文化を経験することに恐れがない。
But we don’t know, maybe in the near future it will change. It’s not a question of who will match. Because anybody must learn English. Young or old, you know, active or not active or shy or confident. It doesn’t matter.
でも、多分そういう質問も近い将来には意味がなくなると思う。だって、みんな学ばないといけないから。若かろうが年をとっていろうと、アクティブでもそうじゃなくても、恥ずかしがり屋でも自信家でも関係ないんだ。
You have experience to teach over 1000 students. Maybe you know what kind of people can easily improve their English?
たくさんの生徒を教えた経験から、どういうタイプが英語が上達しやすいとかある？
When you are speaking your native language, for example, especially Japanese actually and when you are speaking English, you are different people. For example if there’s a young boy and he grew up in America or for example he’s starting to learn English in America. His father observes him. His father notices that when he is speaking English, he is a different kind of person. He is active and he is not shy and he is talkative. But when he speaks in Japanese, he is another kind of person, like that.
言語によって性格は変わるんだよ。例えば、アメリカで育った子供が、英語だと社交的だけど、日本語を使うと別人のように恥ずかしがり屋になることとかあるよね。
So maybe if you really wanna learn English, it’s a bit connected to your character or thinking. Because the English language is a very free and expressive language for communication and conversation. I’m not sure about the Japanese language but English is like that.
確かに、英語の学習は、その人の性格や考え方と繋がりがある。だって、英語はすごく自由で、表現する言語だから。日本語のことは分からない。でも英語ってそういう言語なんだ。
Maybe those students who are that kind of person who wants to change or are curious. They wanna learn many things. They can easily to learn English compared to the typical… I mean shy Japanese.
たぶん、何かを変えたかったり、いろいろ学びたい好奇心が旺盛な人のほうが合うかもね。恥ずかしがり屋の人より学びやすいかもしれない。
So you mean the typical Japanese can not easily learn?
典型的な日本人にとっては難しいってこと？
It’s not a matter of easy or difficult. Of course it depends on the student and the teacher.
簡単とか難しいとか関係ないよ。当然、生徒と先生による。
Okay for example If people are so shy.
分かった。でも、たとえば、生徒がすごい恥ずかしがり屋だとすると。
No, it’s not important. There is no shy student to a good teacher. If the teacher is very good, he or she knows how to handle any kind of student.
いや、それは問題ではない。良い先生の前では恥ずかしがる生徒はいない。もし先生がすごい良ければ、彼らはどんなタイプの生徒もうまく教えられるよ。
Please tell me how can I find a good teacher?
良い先生の見つけ方を教えてよ。
Most of my friends are teachers so I know many friends very well. About teachers, Ummm I met really really good ones. If you can understand the whole of English. it’s like sometimes English to them is like mathematics. Like a genius. They can really know the pattern of English, some of my friends.
僕の友達のほとんどは先生だから、僕はたくさんの良い先生を知ってるよ。英語って数学みたいにロジカルなもの。いい先生はそのパターンを知ってるね。
But there are teachers. Umm, I don’t wanna talk about this but sometimes, for example some very small online schools. They advertise that you can study with this kind of teacher. They just say that if the teacher is Filipino, it’s already automatic or it’s natural, that is a good teacher. But that is not true. Still you have to find the good teacher or teacher with a lot of experience. Basically if the teacher has a lot of experience, that teacher is a good teacher.
ただ、確かにそんな先生ばかりじゃない。うーん。こんなこと言いたくないけど、確かに時々小さなオンラインスクールの広告でどうかなと思う時はある。先生がフィリピン人だから素晴らしいってね。それは正しくない。たくさんの経験を積んだ先生を探さないといけない。通常、たくさんの経験がある先生はいい先生だよ。
If so, for me it’s better to ask how long have you been teaching?
じゃ、どれぐらい先生やってますか？って聞けばいいの？
Ummm not necessarily. because some people teach a long time but not well, right? Some people teach a short time but if that system where the teacher is, it has a kind of training system, you can feel better that that teacher is improving himself or herself. So it’s not a guarantee if the teacher is teaching a long time automatically it’s good. But maybe my friends, they’re really good. I can assure you.
うーん。それは必要ない。だって、長くやってるからいいわけじゃないでしょ。たとえば短い期間でも、もしいいトレーニングシステムがあれば、たぶん先生の英語は上達してる。だから、長くやってるからいい先生というのは保証できないんだ。まあ、僕の友達はみんないい先生だから、紹介できるよ。
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
ところで、なぜ先生になることにしたの？
Well, when I was in the university my major was English. But actually I wasn’t planning on becoming a teacher. But when I graduated, there were two very very popular jobs in the Philippines. The industry of the call center, you can meet American customers. And the other is teaching. The educational Business.
大学の時の選考は英語だった。で、実際先生になろうと思ってたんだ。大学を卒業したら、フィリピンでは2つの仕事が有名だ。1つはコールセンター。アメリカ人の顧客のね。で、もう1つが英語の先生。
Maybe call center salary is higher than a teacher’s?
コールセンターの給与って先生より高いよね。
Yes that time. But not anymore. Not only the salary. it’s not so important actually.
当時はそうだね。でも、今は違うよ。でも、重要なのは給与だけじゃない。
But the kind of people who work there. I don’t know, in my opinion, they remain university students. They didn’t change their minds even though they became adults already. They didn’t care, like, should I save money for the future? They wanna buy fashion or like that after they get their salary. And they’re always like a group. I don’t like that kind of thinking like everybody is the same, thinking. They follow the trend. If I work in a call center, I will become like them. That’s why when I went to teaching I realized this is really nice. It’s very free.
個人的な意見だけど、フィリピン人って学生みたいな人が多いんだ。大人になっても子供みたい。将来に対して準備しないし、お金をセーブすることもしない。給料が入ったら服を買ってね。いつもグループで行動する。僕はそういう考えは好きじゃないし、みんなと同じもつまんない。単にトレンドを追いかけるのも好きじゃない。でも、もし僕がコールセンターで働いてたら、自分もそうなってしまう気がした。だから、英語の先生をやってみた時、すごいナイスな仕事だと思ったんだ。
Plus the best thing for me is I could learn many things from my students as well. I met different kinds of people: old or young, professional or not. Every person has a story and something teach me. When I talk to them, I enjoy.
さらに、僕にとって最高なのは、生徒からたくさんのことを学べることなんだ。いろんなタイプの人に会えるでしょ。年配の人から若い人、何かのプロフェッショナルの人やそうでない人も。みんな物語を持ってるし、何か教えてくれるんだ。生徒と話すと楽しいよ。
What is your image of the Japanese?
日本人のイメージってどんな感じ？
I think Japanese are very polite, very kind as well. But sometimes I felt — just compared to Filipinos — Japanese can be very serious and they are not confident. Because Filipinos are very… they can sing, they can dance. Maybe not well but they are not shy, they will try. But Japanese are shy compared to Filipinos. American are not shy as well. You can learn many things about different cultures if you learn English.
とても、礼儀正しくて親切だね。でも、たまに感じるんだけど、まあフィリピン人と比べるとね、日本人は深刻すぎるし、自信がないよ。フィリピン人は例えうまくできなくても、出来る！って言うでしょ。恥ずかしがらずにね。アメリカ人もでしょ。でも、日本人はそうじゃないね。もし、英語を学べば、いろんな違う文化も学べるよね。
What is an important thing for improving English?
英語を上達するのに重要なことは？
Well, It depends on where you are. Because of course if you stay in Japan there are very few chances to speak. But language is not dead knowledge. It’s a very practical knowledge. So if you don’t practice it, you will lose it. It’s like a knife. If you don’t use a knife, little by little it will become rusty, not sharp. The English skill is like a knife, you have to keep on using it.
それはどこにいるかによるね。もし君が日本にいたら、話す機会がないでしょ。でも、英語は単なる知識じゃない。実践的な知識。もし、使わなければ、失うよ。ナイフのようにね。もしナイフを使わなければ、少しずつ錆びていくし、シャープでなくなるよね。英語もそんな感じ。使い続けないといけない。
But in Japan we don’t have the chance.
でも、日本では英語を使う機会はないんだ。
Yes. That’s a big problem. You must find a way to practice your English. I don’t know how, but practice practice practice.
そう。それは大問題。英語を使う方法を見つけないといけない。僕はその問題の解決方法は分からないけど。使って使って使い続けないといけないよ。
Finally do you have any message for Japanese who plan to come here?
最後にフィリピン留学を検討してる人に何かメッセージある？
If you are interested in learning English and… okay even if you are not interested, I think you should consider the reality, it’s like English is becoming a very very practical and necessary language. And the world is constantly becoming connected. So we can’t escape this fact. Little by little if we wanna become successful or if we wanna have many friends, we have to learn another language or a language other than our native language. And English is the best language because it’s the international language. So if you decide to finally learn English, the Philippines is the best place to learn. The most practical after you consider everything, like, you go to Britain, you go to the America, or you go to the Philippines.
もし英語に興味あるなら、いや、もし興味なくてもいい。思うんだけど、みんな現実を考えたほうがいいと思うんだ。英語は実践的で必要不可欠な言語となってる事実を。世界はどんどん繋がっていってるし、我々はこの事実から避けられないんだ。何かに成功したかったり、たくさん友達を作りたいと思ったら、英語が必要になってるよね。だから、僕たちは言語を学ばないといけない。で、それには英語がベストなんだ。だって、国際的な言語でしょ。そして、もし、君が英語を学ぼうと決めたなら、フィリピンはベストだよ。
What is the strong point compared to going to the native-speaker’s country?
ネイティブの国で勉強するのに比べて、フィリピンで勉強することのメリットは？
Here the system of studying English is man-to-man. We call it “man-to man.” It’s person to person. So you can be assured that the kind of English study that you have is personalized or customized. Because usually in the other countries it’s group setting. So you will be joining — how many members? Maybe, let’s say 10. I can’t image that in an hour or two hours you will have plenty of chance to speak. But here in the Philippines we try to give every opportunity to the student to practice their English. That’s why it’s man-to-man or person-to-person.
フィリピンでの英語学習はマンツーマンだ。1対1。どんな授業も個人ごとにカスタマイズできる。他の国ではグループレッスン。たとえば、1グループ10人としよう。1、2時間でどれぐらい話す機会があるのか僕はイメージできないよ。でも、フィリピンでは違う。マンツーマンだからね。
So if they’re interested in learning English I think they should give the Philippines a try. And then they can decide for themselves. I don’t want them to, like, just believe what I am saying. I just want them to try and check for themselves and see what’s happening in the Philippines. And I am confidence that they will realize what I’m saying is true.
でも、みんな自分たちで決めれる。僕を信じて、なんて言いたくない。ただ、言えるのは調べてみてってこと。フィリピンに何が起きてるかをね。でも、調べてくれたら、僕が言ってることが事実だって分かってもらえる自信があるよ。
During the 10 years you feel studying English for Japanese is getting popular?
この10年の間に、日本人にフィリピン留学は盛り上がってきてると思う？
Yes I think so. And I can know it because when I was teaching Koreans, It’s a very similar pattern. And then first time I started teaching Japanese of course I saw only a few people. but day by day the number of learners interested in learning, it’s increasing. Day by day more and more students are coming.
そう思うよ。僕が韓国の学校で教えていたから分かる。韓国の昔とよく似てるんだ。日本人に教えはじめた時は、生徒は少なかった。でも、日増しに勉強する人の数が増えてきてる。どんどんね。

フィリピンの英語の先生は優秀だけど、その中でも特別優秀な先生がたまにいる。モンはその中の1人だ。僕は彼がタガログ語を話しているのを聞いたことない。TOEIC満点って知って、すごいなと言うと、先生だから当然だよ。でも1回目は20点足りなくて恥ずかしかったんだって言う。会話の中でプロフェッショナルを感じる先生。やっぱり先生は重要。みなさんも良い先生に出会えることを祈ってます！それぞれの学校のヘッドの先生にインタビューしたら英語力も上がるかもしれない。なぜなら恥ずかしいから。
