好奇心旺盛な生徒はフィリピン留学で英語だけじゃなく生活態度も2週間あれば変化する。
マニラのアラバンにあるPICO語学学校はちょっと特徴的な学校。日本人オーナーだけど、日本人スタッフがいなくて、現場マネージャーはフィリピン人。そのマネージャーのリーゼルに話を聞く機会があったので、いろいろ聞いてみました。

フィリピン留学の価値
I’m Liezel and I’m 30 years old. Actually I was born in Muntinlupa city where Alabang is located in Manila. And I spent in 30 years here in Manila. And I finished my college having the course of “Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in management”. I finished the course in 2004. And after that I worked in some company like NISSAN Diesel as a secretary.
リーゼルです。30歳です。私はマニラのアラバンにあるモンテンルパで生まれ育ちました。大学ではマネジメントを学び、2004年に卒業。その後は、いくつかの会社で働きました。例えば、日産ディーゼルの秘書とか。
Here in the Philippines?
フィリピンで？
Yes. And Jollibee as Shift Manager. After that, I moved to Japan.
はい。あと、ジョリビーのシフトマネージャーもしました。その後、日本に引越したんです。
Already you got some job?
仕事で？
No. I just went to Japan for visiting my relative. So I think it’s my chance to go and to work to Japan, so I grabbed a opportunity. At that time I learned a lot of thing about Japanese people and Japanese culture.
いえ、親戚を訪ねに行ったんです。でも、これは日本で働くチャンスだと思って、そのチャンスを掴んだんです。あの時は、たくさんの事を学んだ。日本人や日本の文化をね。
Language also
日本語もでしょ？
Yes. It’s the most important thing I need to study first. because Japanese don’t know about.. Actually they run away if I ask them ‘Excuse Me’.
そう。日本語は絶対学ばないといけなかった。だって、私が日本人に「ちょっと、すいません」って話かけたら、逃げていくんだもん。
Really?
本当に？
Yeah. They don’t want to talk to me. So I think oh I must study “Nihongo Language”.
本当。日本人は外国人と話すのに慣れてないんですよね。だから、日本語を絶対覚えないといけないって思ったんです。
But you can.
でも、喋れるでしょ。
Now I can. After 6 month staying in Japan. I study by myself so everyday I need to read Japanese Phrase book and dictionary. And I alway do the same thing Japanese say how do they pronounce word.
今はね。日本に6ヶ月住んだあたりから喋れるようになった。毎日日本語のフレーズ集や辞書を読んで、必死に独学で勉強したの。日本人の話し方をマネしてみたりして。
Okay. And then now you are a manager in PICO Language School, right?
そして、今はPICO語学学校のマネージャーなんですよね。
Yes. I became the manager because Mr. Watanabe entrusts me and he believes me. Filipino are not all bad. There are very good thing in Filipino. Because most of Japanese image for Filipinos are not so good.
そう。マネージャーになった。オーナーの渡辺さんは私を信じてくれて任せてくれた。彼はフィリピン人を信じてる。みんなが悪いわけじゃない。フィリピンにも良い所はある。だけど、ほとんどの日本人にとっては、フィリピン人のイメージはあまりよくない。
Yes. it’s true.
それは事実。
He wants to improve that not all are the same. So he wants to give a good job for Filipino and he knows that Filipino can work like Japanese do. Because most of Japanese company in the Philippines need to have the Japanese staff. Normally they don’t believe Filipino. But about Mr. Watanabe, He wants to manage this school by Filipino. because he believes Filipino.
彼はそれを変えたいの。フィリピン人みんなが同じじゃない。だから、フィリピン人によい仕事を与えたい。フィリピン人も日本人と同じようにちゃんと働ける。でも、フィリピンにある日系企業のほとんどは、日本人スタッフを採用する。普通フィリピン人は信用されてない。でも、渡辺さんは、この学校をフィリピン人で経営したいと思ってる。フィリピン人を信じてるから。
And now you are the manager.
そして、あなたがマネージャーになった。
So now I manage because I need to.
そう。
You manage about human resourse and facility everything, right?
人材や施設を管理してるんでしょ。
Yes. I’m overall in charge about hiring staffs and teachers and then checking facilities. Most of all I’m the one who is responsibility for Japanese concern. handling Japanese issues. ‘why do you live in the Philippines?’ Because I can speak Japanese 50%.
そう。スタッフや先生の採用は全部見てるし、もちろん施設のチェックもする。日本人の問題に責任を持ってるし、トラブルにも対応します。だって、日本語が50%できるから（笑）。
This is the one of good point about this school. You are manager form Philippines. But you can speak Japanese and you know Japanese mentality also.
この学校の特徴の1つだと思う。フィリピン人がマネージャー。でも、日本語が話せるし、日本人の気持ちも分かる。
Yeah. Most of our staff they said I’m half Japanese and half Filipino. Because of my working style I have already learned Japanese style.
みんなが私のことを、日本人とフィリピン人のハーフって言う。それは私の働き方のせい。私は日本で日本のスタイルを学んだから。
PICOについて
Okay. Please tell us about your school PICO.
ピコ語学学校について教えて。
Now I’m working in PICO. Meaning of PICO is just feeling. But once people enter in our school. They can feel really difference ambiance or spirits. Most of students and teachers who enter PICO told me the same thing, it’s seems like very good feeling, like happy or safe and clear thing. everything is good.
ピコって言葉には特に意味はないの。でも、ピコに来た生徒や先生はすごいいい感じって言ってくれる。ハッピーで安全、そしてキレイ。全部いいって。
So PICO is located in Alabang. We started our operation in 2011. So now PICO is around 2 and half years. And then all of our students are form Japan. Why only Japanese? Because we don’t want to mix different culture and problems. So we want to only foucs one kind of culture so that we can master how to give good service to them for only Japanese. And we love Japanese people.
ピコはマニラのアラバンにあります。2011年から始まったから、もう2年半です。生徒は全員日本人。なぜ日本人だけかというと、文化の違いや問題をミックスしたくなかったから。日本人だけに集中して、日本人にとってよいサービスを追求したいから。それに、私たちは日本人を愛してるから。
And mainly our goal is to push every Japanese to speak and get their confidence in speaking English. But normally Japanese character they feel very shy, they feel very you know secret. So we want them to became open.
私たちのゴールは、日本人に英語を話す自信を持ってもらうことなの。でも、一般的には、日本人の性格は、恥ずかしがりやで、秘密主義でしょ。もっとオープンになってもらいたいの。
When you went to Japan, you feel so? Japanese are shy?
日本に行った時、日本人は恥ずかしがりやだなと思った？
Normally, I think so. First impression I will give to Japanese is they are very polite, respectful. So everytimes they alway praise and said ‘Thank you’ and ‘Excuse me’ even though you are foreigner or not. so always.
そう思った。でも、最初の印象は、親切で礼儀正しいなって思った。いつでもお辞儀して、ありがとう、すいませんって言うでしょ。外国人に対しても同じで。
Your first impression is polite. Now you think so too.
今でも親切な人たちって思う？
Yeah they are also. But somethings when they go around the country maybe they feel unstable. the feeling is very nervous because they don’t know what to do they can’t communicate well in English.
もちろん。でも、海外に行くと、不安定になるかもしれない。どうしていいか分からなくてナーバスになったり。
They don’t have confidence.
自信がないのかも。
Normally they don’t open up their mind. So most of the culture they know in Japan they bring out. So they have difficult to in adjusting about lifestyle.
通常、心を開かないよね。日本と違うライフスタイルに適応するのが難しそう。
Because Japan is island. Okay most important thing is to make Japanese change and more open.
日本は島国だからね。じゃ、学校が一番大切にしてるのは、日本人をもっとオープンに変えること？
Yes I think it’s the most important because if you don’t know how to adapt one culture and you can not bend something, you can not learn.
そう思ってる。もし、文化に適当できなかったり、何かのコダワリを変えれなかったら、学べないと思うから。
Maybe you have a lot of experience to see a lot of student, right? Some student can’t change themselves?
たくさんの生徒を見てきたでしょ。変わらない生徒もいるよね？
Yes. I think 75% of them changed by studing in PICO. Maybe first one week is very diffucult for them because they have difficulty about adjusting schedule, food, attitude, culture. but after that they can understand this is not Japan then they can appreciate difference Japan and Philippines. So they tend to learn and they change.
もちろん。でも、ピコで勉強した75%ぐらいの生徒は変わったと思う。最初の1週間はとてもハード。スケジュール、食べ物、態度や文化に適応しないといけないから。でも、その後は、日本とフィリピンの違いを理解して、学んでいくし、変化していく。
Because normally first one week they feel stiff, very hard. They don’t speak, they don’t even laugh. Then sometimes they don’t want to talk personal question, for example ‘How old are you?’
普通、最初の1週間はとてもハード。喋れないし、笑わない。個人的な質問にも答えたがらない。たとえば、何才ですか？とかも。
Yeah but Filipino like very.
でも、フィリピン人は個人的な質問が大好きでしょ。
Yes. Even if don’t ask, we will say. But Japanese is very very private.
そう。私たちは聞かれてなくて答える（笑）。でも、日本人はすっごいプライベート。
It’s our culture. Because in Japan for example this is first time to meet and I ask you private question, it’s impolite.
それは日本の文化だよ。もし日本で、初対面の人にいきなりプライベートな質問をしたら失礼だから。
But for us, here in the Philippines it’s not.
でも、私たちは違う。
Now I understand. So you saw a lot of student changing. How much do you think is enough time to change their charactor.
僕は今は分かるよ。たくさんの生徒を見て、どれぐらいの期間で性格がオープンになるの？
I think 2 weeks is enough for them to teach how to became more soft person.
2週間ぐらいで、ちょっとオープンになってくる。
It’s not for English but thier behavior?
それって英語力というより、性格がオープンになるってことよね。
Yes. But there are few Japanese that they don’t really want to change. You can see in their action. Because if they are curious or they want to change, they will follow some of your advices. But some Japanese are very very hard.
So for example, ‘you should go out with them.’, ‘you should talk with teachers.’ ‘No No I will go by myself’ like that.
そう。でも、絶対変わりたくない日本人もいる。もし好奇心旺盛だったり、変わりたい人は、いろんなアドバイスを受けて変わっていく。でも、そうじゃない人ももちろんいる。外に出かけようとか、先生と話しましょうと誘っても、いいえ、一人で大丈夫です。みたいなね。
So in that time if he refuse to do that maybe he want to do everything alone. He doesn’t want anyone to be with him. In that time I give to him it’s his choice. So I don’t push anymore.
そういう時は、一人で全部やりたい人だと思う。それは彼の選択だから、それ以上はプッシュしない。
But if I know there is a chance this person will change and this person will became more open person. Then I push! I push! I push. Actually one student told me before, that PICO is good school because PICO don’t only teach English but we also teach about behavior.
でも、変わりそうだなって思ったら、プッシュプッシュプッシュです（笑）。ある生徒に言われたの。ピコは英語だけじゃなくて、生活指導もしてくれるからいい学校ですねって。
Who teach?
誰が教えるの？
Teachers! Because in our school in the Philippines we have the “Manner” subject for example how to answer your teacher even through teacher is young. You need to respect to a teacher because he is a teacher.
もちろん先生。学校はマナーも大切にしてる。たとえ先生が若くても、先生は尊重しないといけない。だって、先生だから。
But sometimes Japanese high profile student they don’t respect. So I need to remind to them. For example this school you need to follow our protcol. So sometimes I fight to the student.
でも、時々、高学歴の日本人はフィリピン人の先生を尊敬しない。そういう時は、私が注意します。この学校のルールには従ってねって。たまに生徒をケンカしますよ（笑）。
I encounter a lot of difference chracter of Japanese. Very very good, very very kind, very very worst student. different.
いろんな生徒を見ました。すっごいいい人、すっごい親切な人。すっごいイヤな人。みんな違う。
If you saw not so good student, you have to say warning?
ダメな生徒がいたら、注意するのか。
Actually not warning. But if the student do rude action to the teacher then I need to talk with him. よくないよー like that. I need to advice then later he will think of it and will say ごめんなさい。So it’s good thing because he accept and he understand that he had done some mistake. It’s like opening his eye. This school character not only English but also to make you feel like family.
注意とはちょっと違う。でも、態度が悪い生徒がいたら、ちゃんと話さないといけないと思ってる。それはよくないよーってね。でも、アドバイスしたら、ちゃんと理解してくれて、ごめんなさいって言ってくれる。これはすごいいいこと。彼は自分がよくないことをしたことを理解して受け入れてくれたんだから。だから、この学校では英語を学ぶだけじゃなくて、みんながファミリーのようになって欲しいと思ってる。
どんな生徒がフィリピンにマッチするか？
What kind of student will match to the Philippines do you think? Tell me your opinion.
どういう生徒がフィリピンに合うと思う？
Aggressive or adventurious type of student. Because he can live here without any problem. He can adapt any kind of situation in the Philippines.
アグレッシブで冒険的なタイプかな。そういうタイプは何のトラブルもなく生活できる。フィリピンのどんな状況には対応できるから。
But most of Japanese is not like this.
でも、普通はそうじゃないよ。
Yes normally. So No.1 is adventurious student. No.2 is open mind student. And then No.3 maybe student who want to learn more deeper English or want to know more about outside world. But I think shy student and very narrow thinking style they should not go.
そう、普通はね。だから、1つ目は、冒険的な生徒、2つ目は、オープンマインドな生徒。3つ目は英語をもっと深く学びたいと思ってる生徒か、外の世界をもっと知りたいと思ってる生徒。でも、恥ずかしがり屋だったり、視野が狭い人は来ないほうがいいかも。
They should not come here.
来ないほうがいいか。
Because they will only think Japanese life outside. So it’s very diffficult if they will search Japan here. And here is not Japan. If they expect something not so good it’s okay if they are open to feel.
だって、そういう人はフィリピンに日本を探そうとするから。でも、もしここで日本を探そうとすれと難しい。だって、日本じゃないから。でも、オープンな人なら、ちょっと日本と違うことが起きても、受け入れられるの。
PICOの今後のビジョン
So do you have any vision for the future?
将来の展望とかあるの？
Yes we have. My dream is to make one big area like own building one building for PICO Dormitry. And then Facilitates are together so that we don’t have any problem about going outside. And we can maximize the time and we can securely check our student.
いまはドミトリーと学校の場所が違うけど、私の夢は、それを1つにすること。大きな建物にね。外出する時のトラブルをなくすために施設を一緒にするの。そうすれば、勉強時間も最大化できるし、セキュリティももっと上がる。
Live together in big building.
大きな建物に一緒に住むのね。
Big building on one campus in Alabang. Not in other place.
アラバンで、大きなキャンパスね。他の場所はダメ。
Why?
なぜ？
Because Alabang is very good place. I think it’s very good because security is good and safe. Very Convenient for the students to go.
アラバンはいい場所なの。セキュリティもしっかりしてて安全。生徒もでかけるのに便利。
A lot of malls.
たくさんモールあるしね。
Yeah and easy and good roads and no flood during rain day. Compare to Manila, Alabang area is very good.
そう。モールにも行きやすいし、雨期の洪水もない。マニラと比べると、アラバンはすごい良い場所なの。
But this school’s owner Mr. Watanabe doesn’t want to make campus type.
でも、学校オーナーの渡辺さんはキャンパスタイプは好きじゃないでしょ。
Yeah but that is not campus type.
いや、でも、それはキャンパスタイプじゃない。
What is the difference?
何が違うの？
Campus type is closed, right? But I’m dreaming to make like ”all in one together” but still student can enjoy outside world. In other school student can not go out. student only stay inside the campus. And the world inside the campus it’s very different outside. But in PICO what can you enjoy inside the campus is also the same when you go outside.
キャンパスタイプの学校は閉鎖してるでしょ。私の夢はオールインワンタイプなの。生徒は外出して外でも楽しめる。他のキャンパスタイプの学校は外出できなかったりするでしょ。キャンパス内にずっといたりしてね。でも、キャンパス内は外の世界と全然違うから、フィリピンを感じることが難しい。でも、ピコではキャンパス内でも楽しめるけど、もちろん外出しても楽しめる。
Because here is safe.
それはアラバンが安全だってことね。
留学検討者へアドバイス
Do you have any message for Japanese?
日本人にメッセージある？
Okay. Don’t be afraid. Try it in the Philippines. Because any part of world there is good thing and bad things, right? Normally some Japanese they want to study English accent, American accent or UK accent. But in the Philippines it’s your training ground to know more English before going to America or UK. Because this is like your foundation in learning English.
怖がらないで欲しい。そして、フィリピンにトライして欲しい。世界のどこだっていい事と悪い事がある。普通、日本人はアメリカの発音やイギリスの発音を学びたいでしょ。でも、フィリピンは、アメリカやイギリスに行く前のトレーニング。英語学習のスタートみたいな感じ。
You mean for Beginner?
それはフィリピン留学が初級向けってこと？
For Beginner or for Upper Intermediate. Because in the Philippines you can encounter a lot of pronunciation, accent that other country don’t have. So here you can study faster English, slow English and different kind of speakers.
初級から中級の上まで。フィリピンではいろんな発音の授業がある。いろんな先生から、早い英語から遅い英語まで学べるから。
And aside form learning English. You can enjoy many kinds of culture. you can make a lot of friends in the Philippines. Of course it will help to you to grow as a person to become open minded, and become very confident in speaking English.
それに、いろんな文化を知れるし、たくさんの友達もできる。それはオープンな人になるキッカケになる。そして、英語を話す自信を持てるようになる。
Because in English it’s not only grammar and it’s not only accent but it’s how you understand each other. It’s like good communication. So how do you share your feeling and how do you understand your friends. In the Philippines you can learn a lot of things. English, Having Friends, and Improving your confidence,
英語は文法だけじゃない。アクセントだけじゃない。どうお互いが理解するか。コミュニケーションだから。自分の感覚を人に共有して、友達と理解しあうためのもの。フィリピンではいろんなことが学べる。
Because Filipino is very friendly.
フィリピン人はフレンドリーだからね。
Yes. Very Friendly, if you don’t understand anything, they will keep going to let you understand until you understand.
そう。すごいフレンドリー。もし生徒が理解しなかったら、理解するまでずっと説明しつづけるから。

編集後記
マニラは治安が悪いイメージが強い。首都なのでいろんな人がいるので、トラブル遭遇率は高いかもしれない。でも、都市部が少し治安悪くなるのはどこの国でも同じ。そんな中で、アラバンというエリアは確かにマニラの中でも、ちょっと雰囲気が違った。夜遅くでも、街中には人が多いし、安全な雰囲気がある。
PICOは、アラバンという場所にコダワリがある。フィリピン人で運営することにもコダワリがある。オーナー渡辺さんのコダワリはたまに僕のコダワリと違うので、そういう時にバトルになります（笑）。お互い忘れっぽいので、次の日に普通に話してるんですが、まあいろんなコダワリがある特徴的な学校です。土曜日も授業があるし、時間がない社会人向けの学校。
先生は研修があって、日本の文化やマナーを最初に学ぶそうです。だから、この学校では、フィリピン人っぽいハイテンションな先生は少ない。なんか落ちついてる。真面目。いきなり年齢を聞かれたり、結婚してるのか。と聞かれることもない。ただ、僕のようなタイプは、フィリピン人特有のハイテンションがないと逆にちょっと寂しい。でも、社会人でしっかりと勉強に集中したいビジネスマンには合ってると思う。
